I’ve always considered myself a Pilates teacher; nowadays, I enjoy guiding those who are truly interested in learning Joseph Pilates’ work called Contrology.

Hi, I’m Carmen, founder of Aligned Pilates, and I have been teaching for twenty years. I have honed my practice and teaching skills with first—and second-generation teachers, and I understand what it takes to help people start and stay with a workout program using corrective exercise. As questions arise from students in our sessions, I listen, and this is key to how my guidance will positively impact the experience. My favorite moments are when people share how Joseph Pilates' work, which we call Contrology, changes them beyond the physical component.

My extraordinary teacher, Jay Grimes, said, “Every student that comes through that door is your teacher; you just have to listen.” It has been a rewarding time for me and those keen on learning Joseph Pilates' exercise method.

Together, you and I co-create a movement experience using Joe’s corrective exercise method for your body.

The Space

Since the beginning of Aligned Pilates many years ago, I’ve been obsessed with creating a space where people can practice Contrology in a way that creates change in the body the way Joseph Pilates intended. Today, Aligned Pilates has evolved into a space where people who champion following their instincts and feel successful practicing Joe’s work.

Through an immersive experience of recreating what it was like to train with Joseph Pilates in his later years, students of Aligned train their Reformer and Mat program and have access to other apparatus to practice corrective exercises for their body specifically. Students quickly learn how to move independently and with confidence around the studio and they learn to trust that repetition and consistency of practicing is the only way to bring a change in their body.

The moving parts of Aligned Pilates include Reformers, Mats, the Cadillac, High Chair, Wunda Chair, Arm Chair, Barrels, and other auxiliary apparatus that help teach people about their bodies, improve flexibility, develop a strong torso, work on alignment, and ignite or even re-ignite a mind-body connection. At Aligned Pilates, you have full access to training on Joe’s apparatus designed to learn Contrology.

A consistent practice of Contrology produces a sense of harmony in the body and a feeling of physical and emotional balance that, for our students, makes navigating life so much more peaceful.

Work with ME

From my experience working with many students over the years, I have ideas about how people can effectively learn Joe’s corrective exercises.

Have ACCESS TO THE Entire Studio

Having access to practice using all of the unique apparatus to train exercises inherent to the body’s needs is extremely helpful.

Our students learn to move independently around the studio, exploring and practicing Contrology, which naturally develops a person’s inner intuition of what feels like good movement in the body. Students have access to all the apparatus, making training at Aligned Pilates a unique experience.

Initially, new students work with me to build their program by taking private lessons at least twice a week before moving into more independent practice in our AP (Aligned Pilates) WORKOUTS. Those who practice consistently at Aligned Pilates are invited to SELF-PRACTICE hours, which are hours offered when I am in the studio teaching other students.

a Consistent weekly Practice brings change in the body.

Students who practice two to three times a week, whether in private lessons, AP WORKOUTS, or SELF-PRACTICE hours, will experience a change in their bodies quickly. This builds a strong foundation in the body so new information can easily be assimilated as the person progresses.

An Open-Mind is key to learning Controgloy.

Pilates requires discipline, time, and dedication. It may initially feel unfamiliar and challenging, so I always say, “Don’t quit before the magic happens!" The key is to be open to new experiences and trust Joe Pilates’ brilliant corrective exercise method.
